General Household Survey 2005 Smoking & drinking among adults (UK)

November 2006

Questions about drinking alcohol were included in the General Household Survey every two years from 1978 to 1998. Following the review of the GHS, the questions about drinking in the last seven days form part of the continuous survey, and have been included every year from 2000 onwards. Questions continuing the long-running series designed to measure average weekly alcohol consumption were included from 2000 to 2002 and again in 2005. Before 1988 questions about drinking were asked only of those aged 18 and over, but since then respondents aged 16 and 17 have answered the questions using a selfcompletion questionnaire.

This report presents information on trends in alcohol consumption, and on the association between consumption and characteristics of individuals such as sex, age, socio-economic position, and ethnic group.
