Old Enough to Vote, Enlist and Marry, but to Drink?

The call by college presidents and others to lower the drinking age to 18 years old ("Bid to Reconsider Drinking Age Taps Unlikely Supporters," U.S. News, Aug. 21) is an idea whose time is long passed. One major outcome of such a foolhardy idea would be to increase the rate of illegal drinking of 16- and 17-year-olds far above what it is now. Paramedics would be scraping more adolescents off the pavement and responding to more cases of alcohol toxicity in high-school parking lots and university dorms.
