The day that 'binge' became a dirty word

A WEEK after the National Health and Medical Research Council said its "definition of binge drinking will drop" to the equivalent of four pots of beer, or three glasses of wine, the group issued a statement saying new alcohol-consumption guidelines "do not use the term 'binge drinking'".

Alcohol experts have accused the NHMRC of a "stuff-up", saying its handling of the guidelines debate has threatened the credibility of health researchers and obscured a crucially important message.
