Press Release - Fewer Children Buy & Drink Alcohol

But Binge Drinking A Major Worry, Says Trading Standards Survey
27th June 2007

The number of children who buy and drink alcohol is falling significantly, according to a new survey released today (WEDNESDAY) by Trading Standards chiefs.

The proportion of schoolchildren aged 14-plus who buy their own alcohol has dropped from 40% to 28% in the last two years, while the number that drink at least once a week has fallen from 50% to 44%.

The findings demonstrate that education and enforcement campaigns by Trading Standards, the police and the Government that target under age drinking and under age sales are beginning to reap rewards, said Ron Gainsford, chief executive of the Trading Standards Institute. (TSI)

However, the survey also revealed that nearly a third (29%) of youngsters who do drink are regular binge drinkers, consuming five or more units of alcohol at a time at least once a week.
