Apparent Consumption of Alcohol, Australia, 2005-06

KEY POINTS


The total quantity of pure alcohol available for consumption increased by 1.7% from 159.6 million litres in 2004-05 to 162.2 million litres in 2005-06. The apparent per person consumption of pure alcohol by persons aged 15 years and over has increased slightly (0.1%) from 9.83 to 9.84 litres of alcohol between 2004-05 and 2005-06, after increasing from 9.81 litres in 2003-04 (Table 4).

The quantity of beer available for consumption increased from 1,748.2 million litres in 2004-05 to 1,767.2 million litres in 2005-06, an increase of 1.1%. The apparent consumption of beer by persons aged 15 years and over has continued to decrease (Table 1).

The quantity of wine available for consumption has risen from 455.9 million litres in 2004-05 to 461.9 million litres in 2005-06, a 1.3% increase, with the apparent per person consumption of wine by persons aged 15 years and over decreasing from 28.1 to 28.0 litres of wine over the same period (Table 2).

The quantity of alcohol in the form of spirits available for consumption increased from 34.5 million litres of alcohol in 2004-05 to 35.5 million litres of alcohol in 2005-06, an increase of 3.1%. This was driven by an increase (9.0%) in Ready to Drink spirit products, along with a decrease (1.5%) in other spirits. The apparent consumption of alcohol in the form of spirits by persons aged 15 years and over increased by 1.4% from 2.12 to 2.15 litres of alcohol between 2004-05 and 2005-06 (Table 3).
