Press release - PROMOTION OF 'DOWN-IN-ONE' DRINKING TO BE BANNED
19/06/2007

The Portman Group announces a new rule preventing producers from urging people to drink rapidly or down drinks in one.

Drinks producers will be prevented from urging people to drink rapidly or down drinks in one, under new marketing rules published today.

The new restriction will apply to all pre-packaged alcoholic drinks marketed in the UK from 1 January 2008. It follows a public consultation involving drinks companies, medics and alcohol charities on the Portman Group’s Code of Practice on the Naming, Packaging and Promotion of Alcoholic Drinks.

The Code covers a drink’s name and packaging, press releases, websites, sponsorship, sampling, branded merchandise, advertorials and all other promotional material. It seeks to make sure that all alcohol marketing is responsible, does not target under-18s and in no way encourages excessive drinking.
