Supermarkets selling cheap beer and wine will be targeted by the Government’s new alcohol strategy, which was announced as it emerged that one in six Britons is suffering from a drink problem. Low prices and special promotions are one reason for a big rise in problem drinking, ministers believe. The move comes as the Government published figures showing there are 8.2m people - about one six of the adult population - who drink to excess.
