Government can learn from UK Conservatives on Solutions to Irelands Alcohol Problem says Leading Youth Organisation
Calls by the UK Conservative Party for extra taxation on alcohol have been welcomed by Youth Work Ireland, the group says the Irish Government should learn from these developments. The British Conservatives have called for a substantial increase in taxes on alcohol in the U.K. citing this measure as proven to be successful in addressing binge drinking.
"The Government’s Strategic Task Force on Alcohol has previously called for such taxes in Ireland but the Government has largely ignored these. Increases in taxes on alcohol when applied have been shown to work particularly on products targeted at young people. This is an evidenced based approach which we cannot afford to ignore" said Michael Mc Loughlin of Youth Work Ireland
