The Social Context of Alcohol Use in Australia

This report by the National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction (NCETA) at Flinders University addresses a range of contemporary issues related to the use of alcohol in Australia.

The report contains 14 separate chapters each addressing a different key issue.  Summary content is provided on each of these areas. The report does not provide expansive coverage on all issues. The content of the document should be viewed as
introductory rather than comprehensive.

A large and extensive literature is available on alcohol spanning research work undertaken over the past three to four decades. Most research and understanding about alcohol however has been driven by either clinical or epidemiological
concerns. Less attention has been directed to the social aspects of alcohol. This report therefore focuses on the social context of alcohol use in Australia. In doing
so, it draws on a wide range of issues and different types of literatures, including some of the more traditional clinical and epidemiological studies.
