Taxes double on ready-to-drink alcohol

THE cost of popular alcohol drinks will soar by up to $1 a bottle from today as part of a Federal Government effort to reduce binge drinking among teenagers.

The price of ready-to-drink beverages, or ‘‘alcopops’’, will increase from between 30c to $1.30 a can or bottle depending on their alcohol content.

This includes drinks such as Bacardi Breezers, rum and coke, vodka mudshakes, Vodka Cruisers and UDLs.

The cost rise is because of an increase on the excise on alcopops so it matches the excise of spirits. The excise rate on remixed drinks will rise from $39.36 a litre to $66.67 a litre of alcohol content.

This closes a tax loophole, whereby tax was lower on pre-mixed products compared with spirits.
