Press Release - ICAP and NTSC Announce Co-implementation of Global Actions on Harmful Drinking Initiative in Vietnam

The International Center for Alcohol Policies (ICAP) and Vietnam’s National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC) today launched a Joint Initiative on Drink Driving to be carried out in Vietnam through 2012 as part of Global Actions on Harmful Drinking (www.global-actions.org).

Global Actions on Harmful Drinking is the result of a collective commitment made by the chief executives of major international beverage alcohol producers to make a significant effort to address harmful drinking in the 2010-2012 time frame. Global Actions efforts in 18 low- and middle-income countries are currently addressing three critical areas: Drink Driving, Self-Regulation of Advertising and Marketing, and Noncommercial Alcohol. ICAP is the lead coordinating organization for this series of initiatives.

“We want to acknowledge Vietnam’s leaders across sectors who played a significant role with their support of this effort and of Global Actions on Harmful Drinking,” said ICAP Vice President Brett Bivans. “We would also like to point out that this initiative is being launched as part of a more unified and comprehensive approach to alcohol policy in Vietnam− the result of brewers, distillers, and government ministries working together to reduce harmful drinking.”

ICAP’s co-implementation of the effort with NTSC is the result of a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the organizations this month. The principles of the agreement were established by private and public sector delegates at the second ICAP Asia-Pacific Alcohol Forum in October, convened to offer a venue for key stakeholders across sectors to discuss and respond to the Global Strategy for Reducing Alcohol-Related Harm adopted by WHO earlier this year. Vietnam’s delegation, with the active participation of relevant ministries, industries, and organizations, emerged with a commitment to collectively support the Joint Initiative on Drink Driving.  > > > >
