Booze group rejects labels

THE alcohol industry has denied Australia is in the midst of a binge drinking epidemic and is resisting a push for product warning labels.

Despite the recent surge in alcohol-fuelled violence, the Distilled Spirits Industry Council of Australia argues that alcohol consumption levels have dropped over the past 40 years.

In a submission to a Senate committee, the council said there was no reliable evidence that health warning labels would encourage "at risk groups" to moderate their drinking.
