Children under 10 are taught to drink alcohol at an indigenous community of unparalleled squalor in Western Australia, an inquest was told.
Tommy May, in his seventies, told the inquest he lives in an asbestos and corrugated iron dwelling with no beds at the Mindi Rardi community outside Fitzroy Crossing where alcoholism is rife.
As WA Coroner Alastair Hope began examining 11 cannabis and alcohol-related deaths in Fitzroy Crossing, Mr May told of children under ten drinking alcohol or smoking cannabis in his community.
