Crackdown' on alcopop marketing questioned

AN INDUSTRY crackdown on alcohol products that appeal to children has been slammed by health groups, who say items such as a "Bubbie Stubbie" baby's bottle holder, "Vodka Twistee Shots" and alcoholic "Mudshakes" would not be banned under new plans.

A coalition of alcohol industry groups has applied to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to be given powers to regulate packaging and naming of products. They say it will stamp out those that encourage under-age or binge drinking, and is based on a British system that has resulted in 70 products being removed from the market since 1989.

But critics say the move is a diversionary tactic to forestall government regulation amid growing public alarm over dangerous drinking.
