Biomarkers have considerable potential as indicators of disease states and processes as well as aids in assessing responses to therapeutics.
Biomarkers of alcohol consumption, alcohol dependence and alcohol-induced tissue and organ damage are necessary for detection and diagnosis of alcohol use disorders and for evaluations of the efficacy of treatments for these disorders.
As alcohol use disorders are prevalent in the general population and have broad and long-term effects, improved alcohol biomarkers could provide significant public health benefits.
This session will feature examples of alcohol-related biomarker signatures that reflect both alcohol consumption and alcohol-mediated tissue damage.
Additional presentations will describe novel biomarkers in the fields of cancer and neurodegenerative disorders, with the goal of gaining insights that may be broadly applicable. Challenges and prospects for development and application of biomarkers in the pharmaceutical industry will be also be addressed.
