Alcohol-related hospital admissions rising

VICTORIA has the fastest-growing rate of alcohol-related hospital admissions in Australia, sparking renewed calls for action on binge drinking.

Research figures released to The Age show admissions caused by alcohol consumption increased by almost 70% in the last decade — more than double the national average.

While growth rates have slowed in some states, the number of Victorians treated for alcohol-related injuries caused by violence, road accidents, falls and chronic conditions such as alcohol dependence or liver cirrhosis, continues to rise.
