Alcohol-induced dementia threatens ageing baby-boomers

The number of dementia patients in Finland has been growing in recent years. A surge in the number of patients can be expected if members of the ageing baby boom generation keep drinking as much when they retire as they do now.

Changing drinking habits of women could significantly add to the number of dementia cases in the near future. One in ten women already fall into the category of heavy consumers of alcohol. The number of high-risk drinkers among 80-year-old women is still very small.
