8.2m Britons battling a drink problem

  • Supermarkets selling cheap beer and wine will be targeted by the Government’s new alcohol strategy, which was announced as it emerged that one in six Britons is suffering from a drink problem.

    Low prices and special promotions are one reason for a big rise in problem drinking, ministers believe.

    The move comes as the Government published figures showing there are 8.2m people - about one six of the adult population - who drink to excess. This is classified as regular drinking of eight units a day for men or six for women. A unit is half a pint of beer or a small glass of wine.
